Nilgiri Mountain Railway…

“My heart is warm with the friends I make,
And better friends I’ll not be knowing,
Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
No matter where it’s going.”

~ Edna St. Vincent Millay (The Selected Poetry)

Our family loves train trips. It is such a relaxing and fun way to travel. One of our most memorable train trips was on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in Tamil Nadu, India. We travelled between Mettupalayam and Coonoor on this tiny toy train. The twenty eight kilometres to Coonoor is very steep with lots of tunnels. This route has some of the steepest railway track in the whole of Asia. The open carriages allowed us to chat to others and my boys shared some morning tea with some new-found friends!

To get a feel for this wonderful way to travel please have a look at the adorable clip below from the Indian movie “Dil Se”. This clip was shot on the top of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway…enjoy!
