While travelling in Tamil Nadu this year we discovered the divine Hotel Bangala in the Chettinad town of Karaikudi. If you are looking for a mid-range, character filled hotel with exemplary service look no further than the Bangala. From the moment we stepped into the cool and lush garden we were in love with this beautiful hotel…
The Bangala is a heritage hotel that was originally a mens club. It has been completely restored to its former glory. It is furnished with beautiful hand-picked antiques and vintage family photographs. A collection of old keys decorates the wall of the sitting room and definitely adds to the quaint atmosphere.
The Bangala has an amazing pool to help you cool off after a fun day of sightseeing. There are lots of comfy day beds to lounge on with a book or cool drink. Each of the rooms is tastefully decorated with Anokhi doonas and crispy white sheets. The bathrooms have sandalwood soap and lovely Himalaya products. Each of the rooms opens onto an airy verandah with cane lounges. There are old antique chess boards for the avid player and lots of Indian books in bookcases on the verandas.
The stand-out feature of the Bangala is the amazing food. People come from all over to visit the restaurant. It is definitely the best food I’ve ever had in India. Each meal has 3 courses and the gorgeous waiters keep offering you seconds, thirds and fourths! The restaurant has one side open air which allows you to look into the lush garden while eating a sumptuous meal.
The hotel offers a wonderful guide service. They offer both 1/2 and full day trips exploring the Chettinad region. Our guide Annapurni was a darling and spoke great English. Her knowledge of the area was vast. Later in the evening we saw her at a temple. She ran up and hugged us like long lost friends ~ so sweet!
If you thought that this hotel sounded nearly perfect well wait there’s more…yes a SHOP too! The divine little shop sells a wide variety of Chettinad crafts and gifts. I bought some beautiful home-made paper and Chettinad blue/white pottery soap dishes which made superb gifts.
There is so much to do in the Chettinad area. I will detail the attractions for you in future posts.
