It was with great sadness that I read in the Times Of India yesterday that gorgeous old Gangarams bookshop in Bangalore is closing down.
Book lovers who have visited Bangalore over the last 35 years would be familiar with its quaint 3 storey location on MG Road. It has an amazing collections of books especially those by Indian authors. It was never too much trouble for them to help you to look for a book you were after. Even if it meant searching through the piles of books they had there!
The owner, Mr Prakash Gangaram, said a hefty rental rise coupled with a new train station across the street, that had affected trade, were the main reasons for the store closing. Fortunately the book section of the store will be moving to premises above the atmospheric Koshy’s restaurant in St.Marks Road. However the divine stationary section will be closing permanently.
Gangarams has been in MG Road since 1977. It is a Bangalore institution and will be sorely missed. It’s like losing an old friend…having visited the store over 8 times…I will miss it so!
Thank goodness I can still visit the friendly and special Mr Gangaram around the corner in their new store when I visit in November this year…
